President uncovers the current year’s ‘close to home test’ as site faces persistent feedback over spreading of deception and harm to clients’ emotional well-being.
In the midst of constant feedback of Facebook’s massive power and malignant effect on society, its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, declared Thursday that his “own test” for 2018 will be “to concentrate on settling these critical issues”.
Zuckerberg’s new year’s determination – a custom for the official who in earlier years has swore to learn Mandarin, run 365 miles, and read a book every week – is a surprising affirmation of the unpleasant year Facebook has had.
“Facebook has a lot of work to do – whether it’s protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent,” he wrote on his Facebook site. “We won’t prevent all mistakes or abuse, but we currently make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools.”
